Baddha Virabhadrasana โ€” "bound warrior posture"

Also known as: Devotional Warrior

Warrior I with the hands clasped behind the back and the torso folded inside the front leg. It asks for leg strength, shoulder opening, and balance all at once.

Step by step

  1. 1Set up in Warrior I with your right foot forward and back heel grounded.
  2. 2Interlace your fingers behind your lower back and draw your knuckles down.
  3. 3Inhale to lift your chest and broaden your collarbones.
  4. 4Exhale and fold forward, bringing your torso inside your right leg.
  5. 5Let your clasped arms rise up and over as far as your shoulders comfortably allow.
  6. 6Keep pressing through the outer edge of the back foot and keep the front knee tracking over the toes.
  7. 7Inhale to rise back up with a long spine, release the hands, and switch sides.

Benefits

  • โœ“ Deeply stretches the chest and fronts of the shoulders
  • โœ“ Strengthens the legs and glutes
  • โœ“ Stretches the inner thigh of the front leg
  • โœ“ Challenges balance in a folded position

Make it yours

  • ยท Hold a strap between the hands instead of interlacing the fingers.
  • ยท Keep the hands on the hips and fold only halfway.
  • ยท Rest the shoulder or hands on blocks set inside the front foot.

Take care

  • Skip the bind or hold a strap if you have a shoulder injury.
  • Come up slowly, or keep the fold shallow, if you get lightheaded in head-below-heart positions.

This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.
