Yoga on the beach
Sand is a balance teacher with a view
Sand destabilizes every standing pose just enough to recruit the feet, ankles, and deep stabilizers that flat floors let sleep. The same Tree Pose that's routine in your kitchen becomes genuine training at the waterline — without going an inch deeper.
Beach practice favors standing sequences: floor work gets gritty, and wrists dislike bearing weight on an uneven surface. Firm sand near the water beats soft dry sand for everything except sitting still at the end.
Make it work
- · Practice on the firm, damp sand near the waterline; soft sand is for savasana only.
- · Go barefoot — sand between your toes is the training surface working.
- · Sunrise and the last hour before sunset beat midday for light, heat, and crowds.
- · A towel marks your spot; shake it out downwind of your neighbors.
