Bolster

The single best restorative purchase: firm support that turns five-minute holds from endurance into actual rest.

Our verdict

If restorative or Yin practice is part of your life — or you're doing our evening wind-down sequences — a bolster is the purchase that changes it most. Lengthwise under the spine it opens the chest with zero effort; under the knees it lets the lower back release in final rest; across the hips it makes forward folds something you can stay in. The whole point of a restorative pose is that the body is fully supported, and a bolster is purpose-built full support. Pillows approximate it, but they compress and need constant restacking.

Buy it if…

  • You practise Yin or restorative styles where poses are held for minutes.
  • You use yoga to wind down for sleep — supported poses are the core of our Deep Sleep course.
  • Your lower back complains lying flat; a bolster under the knees usually resolves it instantly.

Skip it if…

  • Your practice is dynamic — Vinyasa and strength-focused sessions barely use one.
  • You're happy stacking firm pillows and folded blankets; it's fussier but it works.
  • You haven't bought blocks yet — blocks serve more of the library.

What to look for

We link to a search, not a specific listing — models change faster than reviews do. These are the things that actually matter when you compare what comes up:

  • Rectangular over round for a first bolster — flat faces are stable under the spine and knees; round rolls.
  • Firm fill (cotton or buckwheat); a bolster that sinks like a pillow can't do its job.
  • A removable, washable cover.

This item supports our Deep Sleep Yoga & Breathwork course — the practice side of the same problem this gear addresses.

Questions people ask

Can I use pillows instead?
For a while, yes — a firm couch cushion is the best stand-in. Bed pillows compress within a minute, and long holds are exactly when that matters.
Rectangular or cylindrical?
Rectangular first: more stable, more versatile. Cylindrical bolsters are lovely for chest openers but rock underneath you in everything else.
