Full Locust Pose
Poorna Salabhasana — "complete locust posture"
The stronger locust from the Bikram/Hot 26 series: arms out like wings, everything lifting at once, the body shaped like a shallow airplane. Pure back-body strength, no props, no hands.
Step by step
- 1Lie on your belly with your chin on the mat and your legs together.
- 2Stretch your arms straight out to the sides at shoulder height, palms down, like wings.
- 3On an inhale, lift your head, chest, arms, and legs off the floor in one motion.
- 4Reach your arms out and slightly back, as if flying, keeping them level with your shoulders.
- 5Keep both legs together and lifting as one unit.
- 6Reach your chest forward and up while your legs reach back and up.
- 7Exhale to lower down with control and rest, turning one cheek to the mat.
Benefits
- ✓ Strongly works the muscles of the mid and upper back
- ✓ Strengthens the glutes and backs of the legs
- ✓ Opens the chest and the fronts of the shoulders
- ✓ Trains the whole back body to fire together
Make it yours
- · Practice regular Locust with arms alongside the body until the back feels strong
- · Lift the chest and arms only, leaving the legs grounded
- · Place a folded blanket under the hip bones for padding
Take care
- Take care with a recent back injury — a lower lift or regular Locust is the wiser choice
- Avoid prone backbends during pregnancy
- Ease off if you feel pinching in the lower back rather than muscular effort
This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.
Props that help here
- Cork blocks (set of 2) — Bring the floor closer in lunges, folds, and triangle — and a block between the shoulder blades turns a backbend into something you can hold. find one
- Bolster — The single best restorative purchase. Under the knees, under the spine, or lengthwise under the back to open a gentle supported backbend. find one
