Reclining Hero
Supta Virasana — "reclining hero pose (supta = reclining, vira = hero)"
Also known as: Fixed Firm Pose, Saddle Pose
From kneeling between your heels, you recline back toward the floor, stretching the front thighs, hip flexors, and ankles. Known as Fixed Firm in Bikram and Saddle in Yin — and in every tradition, a pose to enter gradually.
Step by step
- 1Kneel with your knees together and your feet just outside your hips, tops of the feet on the floor.
- 2Sit your hips down between your heels — if they don't reach the floor, sit on a block or bolster and stay upright instead of reclining.
- 3Walk your hands back and lower onto your forearms, pausing to check in with your knees and lower back.
- 4Only if the front thighs stretch without knee pain, continue down onto your back or onto a bolster.
- 5Keep your knees pointing forward and no wider than your hips.
- 6Rest your arms at your sides or overhead, and breathe steadily.
- 7To come out, press onto your forearms, then your hands, and lift your torso back upright before swinging your legs free.
Benefits
- ✓ Deeply stretches the quadriceps and hip flexors
- ✓ Opens the front of the ankles
- ✓ Extends the front body and opens the chest
- ✓ A counterpose to long periods of sitting, cycling, or running
Make it yours
- · Lie back over a bolster (with a blanket on top for height) instead of the flat floor — most people should.
- · Sit on a block between the heels to reduce knee and ankle flexion before any recline.
- · Place a rolled blanket under the front of the ankles if they complain.
- · Practice one leg at a time: one leg in Hero, the other foot flat on the floor with the knee bent.
Take care
- If you have knee issues, be cautious: this pose loads the knees in deep flexion, and pain there is a signal to come up and choose a gentler quad stretch.
- Ease off if you feel pinching in the lower back — recline less, or stay upright in Hero Pose.
- In later pregnancy, reclining fully flat may be uncomfortable — stay propped high on a bolster or skip the recline.
This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.

- Yoga blanket — Folded under the hips in seated poses, under the knees in kneeling ones, under the shoulders for shoulderstand. A firm household blanket works too. find one
