Sugarcane Pose

Ardha Chandra Chapasana — "half moon bow posture (chapa: bow)"

Also known as: Sugarcane Bow, Half Moon Bow

From Half Moon, bend the floating leg and catch the foot behind you, kicking into the hand to bow the body. Sugarcane adds a backbend and quad stretch to an already demanding balance — earn Half Moon first.

Step by step

  1. 1Set up Half Moon on your right side, right fingertips on a tall block.
  2. 2Steady yourself, then bend your left knee and reach your left hand back for the left foot or ankle.
  3. 3Kick the foot into the hand so the leg arcs behind you like a drawn bow.
  4. 4Keep pressing down through the standing foot and rolling the chest open.
  5. 5Gaze at the floor a little ahead of you for stability.
  6. 6Release the foot, return to Half Moon, then lower with control; repeat on the other side.

Benefits

  • Deeply stretches the front of the lifted thigh and hip
  • Opens the chest and shoulders
  • Strengthens the standing leg and challenges refined balance
  • Builds the kick-into-hand action shared with Dancer and Standing Bow

Make it yours

  • · Use a tall block under the bottom hand — nearly everyone needs it here.
  • · Practice with your back near a wall so the kicking leg can rest against it.
  • · Bend the top knee and reach for the foot without catching it; the shape teaches the action.
  • · Loop a strap around the lifted foot if the hand does not reach.

Take care

  • If you have balance issues, work at a wall or stay with supported Half Moon instead.
  • Take care with knee, ankle, or lower-back injuries — the kick adds load to all three.
  • Skip the catch on days the standing leg feels unreliable; Half Moon is the pose that matters.

This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.
