Tree Pose

Vrksasana — "tree posture"

The classic one-legged balance: root down through one foot, press the other sole into your inner leg, and grow tall. Tree teaches you that balancing is constant small corrections, not stillness.

Step by step

  1. 1Stand tall in Mountain Pose and shift your weight into your left foot.
  2. 2Bend your right knee and place the sole of your right foot on your inner left calf or inner thigh — anywhere but directly on the knee.
  3. 3Press the foot and the leg into each other so neither one wins.
  4. 4Bring your hands together at your chest, or reach them overhead like branches.
  5. 5Fix your gaze on one still point at eye level.
  6. 6Stand tall through the crown of your head and breathe steadily.
  7. 7Release the foot with control and repeat on the other side.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the ankle, foot, and hip of the standing leg
  • Improves balance and steadiness over time
  • Opens the hip of the lifted leg
  • Builds focus — the pose falls apart when your attention does
  • Improves posture through the whole standing side

Make it yours

  • · Practice with your back near a wall, or rest one hand on a wall or chair back.
  • · Keep the toes of the lifted foot on the floor with the heel against your ankle — a kickstand version that still counts.
  • · Place the foot on the calf rather than the thigh; height is not the point.

Take care

  • If you have balance issues or feel unsteady on one leg, practice next to a wall you can touch at any time.
  • Take care with a recent ankle, knee, or hip injury on either side — keep the toes of the lifted foot on the floor instead of lifting it high.

This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.
