Embryo in Shoulderstand
Pindasana — "embryo posture"
Also known as: Pindasana in Sarvangasana
From upward lotus, the folded legs lower toward the face and the arms wrap around them — a tightly curled shape from the Ashtanga finishing sequence. It stacks lotus, deep spinal flexion, and an inversion all at once, so nothing about it should be rushed.
Step by step
- 1Begin in upward lotus in a supported shoulderstand, blankets under your shoulders.
- 2Exhale and slowly lower your folded legs toward your chest and face.
- 3Let your knees settle toward your forehead or beside your head, as your spine allows.
- 4Wrap your arms around your folded legs and, if possible, clasp your hands.
- 5Rest in the curl, weight on your shoulders and upper back, neck completely still.
- 6Hold for a few quiet breaths without pushing deeper.
- 7To exit, release your arms, lift the lotus back over your shoulders, unfold your legs, and roll down slowly.
Benefits
- ✓ Deeply stretches the spine, hips, and back of the neck region's supporting muscles
- ✓ Turns attention strongly inward in a compact, quiet shape
- ✓ Completes the traditional shoulderstand sequence between upward lotus and fish
- ✓ Builds refined control while fully folded and inverted
Make it yours
- · Practice with legs loosely crossed at the shins instead of full lotus.
- · Keep your hands supporting your back instead of wrapping the arms.
- · Lower the knees only partway toward the chest and stay there — the full curl can wait.
Take care
- Avoid with neck, knee, or hip injuries — this combines the demands of lotus, plow, and shoulderstand.
- As a full inversion with deep neck flexion, generally not advised with high blood pressure, glaucoma or other eye conditions, or during pregnancy.
- If breathing feels squeezed or the neck feels loaded, unwind immediately.
This is general practice guidance, not medical advice. If something hurts, ease out of it.

- Yoga blanket — Folded under the hips in seated poses, under the knees in kneeling ones, under the shoulders for shoulderstand. A firm household blanket works too. find one
- Wrist wedge — Reduces the wrist angle in plank, chaturanga, and arm balances. Worth trying before concluding your wrists can't do this. find one
