Yoga Arm Balances

14 poses, every one explained in full

Arm balances hold the whole body off the floor on the hands or forearms. It is the most advanced category in the library by some distance, and the one where the gap between the entry poses and the rest is widest — Plank sits alongside Peacock.

They look like raw strength and are mostly technique. The move that makes Crow work is shifting weight forward of the hands until the feet get light, which feels wrong and is the entire skill. Plank, Forearm Plank and Four-Limbed Staff are the foundation the rest are built on.

What to watch for

Your wrists. Warm them before loading them, spread the fingers wide, and grip the mat with the fingertips so the heel of the hand is not taking everything.

New to these? Start with Plank Pose, Side Plank, then Crow Pose.
