Yoga outdoors

Take the practice to where the air moves

Parks, gardens, forests, rooftops: practicing outside trades climate control for moving air, real light, and ground with opinions. Balance sharpens on uneven grass, breath deepens away from indoor air, and a horizon does something for savasana that no ceiling can.

The forest variant — a slow walk punctuated by standing poses and deliberate breathing under trees — barely resembles a studio class and doesn't need to. Movement, breath, and attention outdoors is the whole recipe.

Make it work

  • · Scout ground before committing the mat — flat-ish and dry-ish is the whole requirement.
  • · Shade for anything longer than 20 minutes; sun moves, plan for where it's going.
  • · Grass under a mat is softer than any studio floor; use the comfort for longer holds.
  • · For forest practice, alternate five minutes of walking with two or three standing poses, repeated.
